“Ciudad de Granada” building: -93.4% humidification energy consumption thanks to CAREL adiabatic technology
A clear demonstration of how energy efficiency and indoor air quality can coexist in a virtuous way. This is the outcome of the project implemented at the “Città di Granada” building in Barcelona, owned by Inmobiliaria Colonial SFL, one of Europe’s leading prime office real estate players.
As part of its ESG strategy and decarbonisation goals, Inmobiliaria Colonial SFL launched an HVAC system refurbishment project with a clear objective: to maintain high indoor air quality standards – 21°C and 50% relative humidity – while improving overall system energy efficiency.
The solution, developed together with CAREL, involved replacing an isothermal electrode humidification system with a high-pressure adiabatic humidification system: humiFog multizone Touch. The project was initially implemented as a pilot test on one of the building’s air handling units, adopting a comparative approach against the existing system.
The results were significant: measurements showed a 93.4% reduction in electrical energy consumption for humidification compared to the previous technology. This shift clearly demonstrates how adiabatic systems can make a tangible contribution to reducing the energy footprint of commercial buildings. In addition, integration into the building’s BMS enabled continuous monitoring of both energy and water consumption, supporting intelligent, data-driven system management. The system, VDI 6022 certified, ensures high hygiene standards and maximum operational reliability.
Today, the “Città di Granada” project represents a replicable model for the commercial real estate sector: lower consumption, greater comfort and a concrete contribution to sustainability targets.
